For the Love of Beer and Baseball

April 3, 2018 by DeniseB

beer and baseballIs there anything more American than baseball and beer? We don’t think so! With stadium names such as Miller Park, Coors Field and Anheuser-Busch, it clear that beer has big presence in baseball. Sipping an ice cold beer and watching a baseball game on a hot summer day has long been one of America’s favorite past-times…

“I think it’s just that atmosphere of a baseball game and having a beer—and maybe a hot dog or brat or hamburger or something of that nature, or peanuts—and just sitting there and sipping on a good beer is always a delight. It seems like the fans always enjoy that, and I do too. But what really intrigues me at that time and at that moment with all the other things that go on in the world, bad, indifferent, good, whatever, at that moment you’re letting your inhibitions down and watching America’s pastime. You’re just relaxed, you can let that stuff go. You prefer a win to a loss, but there’s something about that that’s very intriguing and nice, I believe.” – Beer Bob Gillis

And the joy doesn’t stop there. Thanks to the craft beer craze, fans are no longer forced to spent top dollar for subpar beers. Many stadiums have upped their micro-brew and local brewery offerings, making watching the game much more pleasurable.

Philadelphia – Home of the Perfect Pub Crawl

The city of Philadelphia has been a beer city since the turn of the American Revolution and was known as the greatest brewing city of the Western Hemisphere up until Prohibition in 1920s. Today, Citizens Bank Park, home to the Phanatic’s fans, offers a wide variety of local craft and micro-brews.

Since the craft beer explosion that began in the late 1980s, Philadelphia has regained its reputation as one of the premier beer cities in the nation and around the world. ‘GQ’ dubbed Philadelphia as the Home of the Perfect Pub Crawl.

So there you have it, plenty of incentive to make your microbrew experience a Philadelphia one. If you have a favorite Philadelphia craft beer, please share your thoughts on our Facebook page.

5 March Madness Facts You Need To Know + Printable Bracket

February 13, 2018 by DeniseB

March Madness FactsIf you don’t agree that March is one of the most exciting months of the year for all basketball fanatics, we have some crazy facts to back it up.

Did you know that roughly 3.5 million extra cases of beer are produced to keep up with increased demand during the basketball tournament? Apparently, it also costs businesses $4 billion per year to compensate for all the employees who decide to use their sick days during the tournament! Are you one of them?

This year, we decided to dig a little deeper and put together a list of more March Madness facts you should know about.

5 March Madness Facts You Need To Know

  1. March Madness commercials are just as expensive. If you thought Super Bowl commercials were expensive, you’re wrong. In 2012, the average cost of a 30-second commercial during March Madness was $1.34 million. Moreover, ad spending reached $1 billion for the first time ever that year.
  1. Only one coach has ever won both championships in the NCAA and NBA. That guy is Larry Brown who did it with the Kansas Jayhawks in 1988 (NCAA) and the Detroit Pistons in 2004 (NBA).
  1. The University of Connecticut is the only school to have won men’s and women’s national championship teams in the same year… twice in 2004 and 2014.
  2. The NCAA doesn’t want you to gamble on your bracket. An official policy  states: “Fantasy leagues, March Madness brackets, sports pools, online sports bets and sports parlay cards are all forms of sports wagering. If you put something at risk, such as an entry fee, for an opportunity to win something in return, you violate the NCAA sports wagering bylaws.”
  3. Increase in pizza and beer sales. Everybody knows that watching basketball is that much better if you have a beer and pizza in hand! According to Wallethub, while American beer companies produce an average of 14 million barrels a month, that number will bloat to somewhere between 17-18 million barrels in March. Pizza orders increase by 19%.

Did you know any of these March Madness facts? If you want to know how the March Madness phrase was coined or who holds the most titles by far, visit this post.

5 Facts You Didn’t Know About March Madness

March 15, 2017 by DeniseB

5 Facts You Didn’t Know About March MadnessEveryone knows that there’s much more to March Madness than just basketball. Did you realize that roughly 3.5 million extra cases of beer are produced to keep up with increased demand during the basketball tournament? Or that many companies suffer as they have to deal with distracted employees? Apparently, it costs businesses $4 billion per year!

Nevertheless, last Sunday marked a surely exciting time this month as the tournament teams were selected with the games starting tomorrow, March 16th! See the updated bracket here.

Now, if you’re here for basketball (and a little bit of gambling), here’s 5 Interesting Facts you might not know about March Madness:

  1. The phrase March Madness was first spoken by Brent Musburger during his NCAA tournament coverage in 1982. However, the Illinois High School Boys Basketball Championship said they had been using the name since 1939. The court decision resulted in granting each party its own separate rights to the “dual use trademark.”
  1. The first NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament was held in 1939, and consisted of only 8 teams. Now it’s 68! Read more on how the team selection process works here.
  1. Villanova was the lowest seed to ever win the NCAA Tournament with a No. 8 seed in 1985.
  1. UCLA has won 11 NCAA men’s basketball championships – by far the most titles in history of any school. Kentucky holds a second place with 8 titles, followed by Indiana and North Carolina with 5 each.
  1. If you’re thinking of betting on the games, the odds may not be in your favor. In fact, you might get a better chance winning the lottery! The odds of filling out a perfect bracket are one in 9,223,372,036,854,775,808. You read it right, that’s a quintillion!

What’s the Difference Between Lager and Ale?

February 2, 2016 by DeniseB

Simply put … it’s the Yeast.

What is the Difference Between Lager and Ale?I like just about any kind of beer that has flavor whether it is an ale or lager. I’m not particularly biased in either direction.  If you’re like me, the difference between lager and ale is diluted. But there are many people out there searching for the answer to this question. So I did a little digging and here’s the dirt …

Ales are much older than lagers by thousands of years. Lagers didn’t make their debut until the early 1900s. Typically, ales tend to have a more robust flavor and are better appreciated at warmer temperatures (45°-55° degrees) than lagers (38°-45° F). Lagers are generally lighter and smoother in taste.

Yeast is the determining factor between lager and ale. Lager yeast, Saccharomyces pastorianus, is reported to have been used in 1904 at the Carlsberg brewery in Denmark.  Though there are many similarities of lager yeast and ale yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) perform in a profoundly different manner.

Lager yeast ferments under a much colder temperature and ages for much longer making for a much milder, smoother tasting beer. The word lager means ‘to cold age something’ in German. Conversely, ale ferments at a much warmer temperature and doesn’t get aged as long, so they stay more robust and full-flavored.  An ale can be brewed in as little as seven days, whereas a lager brew cycle lasts several months.

It doesn’t matter what hops or malts are used, so the color is not the determining factor. You could have a really dark lager or very pale ale. Ales typically are a little bit thicker and lagers are a bit thinner, but the two groups overlap in many ways which causes some confusion.

Suffice it to say that limiting yourself to either ale or lager is like limiting yourself to red or white wine. With all the distinct variations and flavors out there, a little experimentation might lead you to the conclusion that you are switch hitter when it comes to beer.

Check out this Video on lager versus ale of the brewmaster at Mill Street Brewery.
